Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana was launched to provide houses to poor and middle class families in the country. Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana was initially known as Indira Awas Yojana but later the Prime Minister of India Mr. Narendra Modi changed its name to Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in 2016.

There are three phases of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana where the first phase started in April 2015 and ended in March 2017. The second phase ran from April 2017 to March 2019. On the other hand, the third phase was completed from April 2019 to March 2022.
At the same time, the central government has set a target to provide the benefits of this scheme to more than 2 crore families between 2022 and 2025. Type of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana
There are some main objectives of starting Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, those objectives are
- The main objective of launching Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana is to provide a permanent pucca house to the citizens of the country.
- At present, there are some families in India whose financial condition is such that they are not able to repair or construct their houses, for this a scheme has been started.
- This scheme has been launched to guide the process of housing development in rural and urban areas.
- There are some families in rural and urban areas who face various difficulties due to natural disasters. This scheme has been started for them.
- The central government will provide a maximum of Rs 2,35,000 for construction of houses to poor and middle class families in urban areas.
- At the same time, the Central Government will provide financial assistance ranging from Rs. 1,20,000 to Rs. 1,30,000 to the poor and middle class families in the rural areas for building houses.
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Beneficiaries
Since we started discussing about Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in the post, we have said that every poor and middle class family in the rural and urban areas of India, who do not have a pucca house to live in or who do not have more than two houses of mud house, all these beneficiaries will be able to get all the benefits of this scheme by applying for this scheme.
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Eligibility Criteria
To apply for Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, applicants must have certain eligibility criteria, these are the eligibility criteria
- The applicant must be a citizen of India. The applicant must be landless or homeless.
- Families who have a one or two room mud house can apply for this scheme.
- No member of the applicant’s family should have a pucca house. The applicant’s family should not be associated with any other housing scheme established by the Government of India.
- The annual income of the family should be between Rs 3,00,000 to Rs 6,00,000 irrespective of different categories.
- The name of the applicant must be in the Ration Card or BPL List.
- There should not be any educated male member above 25 years of age in the applicant family.
- Families which do not have any member in the age group of 15 to 59 years can also apply for this scheme.
- No member of the applicant’s family should be in government service.
- People from Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and Minority communities will be able to apply for this scheme and avail the benefits of the scheme.
Documents required for Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana
Some of the documents that need to be submitted while applying for the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana are:
- Aadhar card
- proof of address
- Ration card
- Proof of age
- Cast Certificate (if any)
- Family Income Certificate
- Bank account number (must be linked with Aadhaar number)

- Passport size photograph
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Application Process
If you are a citizen of a poor or middle class family in rural areas, then to apply under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin, you will have to go to your nearest Gram Panchayat or Block Development Office and complete the application process. Again, if you are a citizen of a poor or middle class family in urban areas, then you will have to apply for this scheme by going to your municipality or nearest bank.
